It's great that you're doing all this testing... >> I disable sound recording...I couldn't see any freezes at all >> only with external input, and no Windows sounds...game is fluid >> 720p with all sound on...I did get freezes Hmmmm >> it seems that Fraps doesn't really sync it at all - video is slightly late at the end of the recording OK now I really think it's audio clock related. Try these tips - pulled from the Audio sync thread: Reinstall video driver. Reinstall sound driver too. Reinstall chipset driver for your motherboard. Set Windows Power Properties to "High Performance" Disable Asus AI Suite and the EPU Engine Set sample rate to 48000 Hz. Use another sound card. Get a USB headset. (or USB microphone) [most popular solution] Don't overclock the Front Side bus. (CPU/GPU overclocking should be OK) Disable Spread Spectrum Bus Clock uninstall "Easy Tune 6" (post #126) [another clock-changing program!] Good luck!
Aha! It seems that setting the sample rate of my microphone to 16-bit 48000 Hz solved it (it is already set to 32-bit 48000 Hz on my "speakers"). I still have to do a bit more organic testing, but it seems just like when recording without sound. I also noticed that now stopping the recording completely causes a lot shorter freeze than earlier - so that could be another way to tell whether the problem is solved or not, I guess. I also didn't test it long enough to see if that solved the desync problem or not.
Did extensive testing, and it's still there, unfortunately, although it's a lot better now. I'll see if changing any other options gets me anything.
Hey guys i had this same exact problem and this is how i fixed it. I purchased fraps awhile back and had this problem for about year. I chucked it up to "not enough memory and need a faster hard drive" But! Since then i picked up a new graphics card/faster hard drive, i figure i would give fraps another shot. But experienced the same exact problem. Complete lag/freeze for 5~30 seconds within 1 to 3 minutes of recording game play. [ This is how i solved my problem In Fraps Menu FPS > Check Box On "only update overlay once a second" Movies > Check Box On "Lock frame rate" 30 or 60 Movies > Folder To save movies in "1 TB Backup drive" Tested multiple resolutions, no chugging during recordings. Recorded with three games all settings set to max for half hour recording sessions, no freezes. I am very Happy. ] I can lock the frame rate at 30 or 60 with no problems. BUT if the overlay is not checked "only update overlay once a second" it will lag/freeze up and this will occur even if the overlay is visible or not! 1 Unlocking the frame rate and turning off the over lay option "only update overlay once a second" causes it to chug and freeze within 1 to 3 minutes. 2 Locking the frame rate and turning off the over lay option "only update overlay once a second" causes it to chug hardcore but not a complete freeze 3 Saving the files to a secondary hard drive completely removes any chugging effects when the Frame Rate Is Locked And Overlay option is on "only update overlay once a second". 4 Saving the files to a secondary hard drive and Turning the Frame Lock Off And Overlay option off still causes the games to chug and freeze. These are some of things i have tried that did not solve my problem. 1 I defrag the system. 2 turned on and off audio recording in fraps 3 switched the save folder to back up drive *reduces chugging but did not stop freezing* 4 tested microphone audio on and off 5 primary system audio on and off 6 tested 5 different sets of resolutions YES even 800x600rez 7 tested 4 games minecraft, skyrim, call of duty, GTA 8 Windows 7 64bit and Windows Xp 64bit dual partition. 9 updated graphics drivers 10 updated sound drivers 11 tried two older versions of fraps *chug and freezes happened more often* 12 readjusted virtual memory 13 all none essential windows7 & xp services are off during tests 14 adjusted the frame rates in fraps and listed games were tested lowest settings possible in windows 7 & xp 15 cat sat on the computer. Sys Specs. Amd Dual Core Athlon X2 2.6gz Asus Mother Board m2nmx, Onboard Realtek audio Asus GeForce Gt440 1GBddr5 *fake overclocked edition* Backup Drive 1 Tb 7,200 RPM 4 Gig ram. *I removed 2gig ram during the tests* fraps records smooth with just 2 gigs res 800x600~1280x720. Higher res requires 4gig to run smoothly. I hope this info can save someone a crap load of time!
@raddogin ... I'm certainly going to give this a try! Many thanks for putting up such a detailed post. Watch this space!
