Default High CPU usage when recording from DVD

I have a problem recording from the desktop. I play the DVD either through, WMP, Power DVD, or Media Player Classic Home cinema and the result is the same. Without Fraps the CPU usage is less than 10% for the media players. When I invoke Fraps the CPU usage goes up to 95% to 100% with 45% going to the media player and 50% going to Fraps. The resulting on screen video is very choppy and so is the Fraps recording on play back. I suspect the problem is a saturated CPU. Why does the media player require more CPU cycles when Fraps is running (from 10% to 45%)? I have dual processors of 3.6 GHz with 3 GB RAM and an INVIDIA GeForce 8600.
Thanks for any direction/advice.

I've never really tried recording a DVD movie with fraps, so I'm not sure. The most I've done is just record some desktop applications, and that was not an issue for me.

Are you trying to convert your DVD video to something that can be played on the PC? If so there are much better methods of doing this. By better I mean faster, smoother footage, and of higher quality.

Yes, I am trying to convert it to a format that will play through TVersity on my PC. There seems to be some copy protection issues with other tools I have tried. I am just puzzled by the Fraps capture causing an additional cpu load on the player in addition to the expected Fraps cpu usage. Anyway what other methods can you suggest?
Thanks

Use something like this:

http://www.dvdfab.com/en/hd-decrypter.htm

To extract it to a folder on your harddrive. After that, use handbrake:

http://handbrake.fr/

You just have to point handbrake at the video_ts folder. Handbrake has a bunch of preset profiles for encoding stuff.

Obviously you should only do this for dvd's that you own, for personal use, ect :P

I tried your suggestion and it does work well for reformatting and backups of DVDs for personal use. I see that Fraps was not intended for this use. However I do find Fraps useful for capturing streaming video from other sources.
Thanks
